Just Better Care: A life of grace, grit and creativity

At 99 years old, Joy is living proof that vitality, purpose and creativity can flourish at any age. A cherished client of Just Better Care Northern Beaches and Northern Suburbs, Joy’s story is one of resilience, exploration and lifelong curiosity.

Born between two world wars, Joy grew up during a time when life was simpler but also more constrained. Her childhood was filled with fairy tales, dances, and the close-knit warmth of family. “We did not know what was going on in the world — and we were not meant to,” she recalls. “As young girls, we were not encouraged to question or engage with the wider world. It was a different time.”

As a young adult, Joy was faced with a choice: settle down or follow a sense of adventure. She chose the latter, working multiple jobs to afford a ship fare to Europe. “Travelling changed me,” she says. “I met people who had been through so much. I came back a very different young woman.”

Later, she married a man she had known through family connections and together they built a life full of love, travel and shared values. They explored the world together and supported each other through its changes.

Joy’s creative spirit remained a constant. She painted, wrote poetry, and later pursued a course in interior decoration, building a career after her children had grown. When she was 98 she fulfilled a lifelong dream: she published her first book of poetry — a personal and thoughtful collection written for women and for her family. “I have been writing since I was a little girl,” she says. “It felt like the right time to share.”

Joy also keeps physically active. After surviving a heart attack several years ago, a personal trainer organised her support, recovery and wellbeing. She now does Pilates twice a week and credits it with helping her feel strong and renewed. “I am often tired after the sessions,” she says, “but always feel better for doing it.”

When asked about her approach to ageing, Joy offers simple, heartfelt truths. “I have never smoked, never really drank, and I have only ever had one partner in life. I have just got on with it.” She speaks warmly of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren – each one important in her life.

Joy also speaks honestly about growing older. “Of course, I get lonely – who doesn’t? But you have to step out of your bubble and keep connecting with people.”

That is where Just Better Care has made a significant impact. “The carers make a huge difference,” Joy says. “They brighten my day. They come in with fresh ideas, share stories, and help me stay engaged. Without them, I would be much lonelier.”

To Joy, ageing well is about continuing to move forward. “You have to let go of old ideas, accept change and stay involved. Everyone sees the world differently. If you really understand that, you avoid conflict.”

When asked what makes her laugh, Joy replies: “Children. And the funny things people say. There is always something to smile about if you are paying attention.”

Asked about the future, she recalls a moment when someone once told her she would live to 104. “So that is what I am aiming for.”

Through creativity, movement, connection and care, Joy continues to live a full and meaningful life.

And in her words: “I just get on with it.”
