Marcel the Shell is just like any other shell. Except he has shoes, and a face. He’s also the subject of the whimsical and delightful film, ‘Marcel the Shell with Shoes On‘ which originated from the interview-style short YouTube videos that went viral a few years ago.

This time Marcel has been separated from his community and family, living in an Airbnb with only his grandmother Connie to keep him company. As Marcel becomes the subject of one of the new Airbnb guest’s documentaries, we get to see what his daily life looks like and join him as he searches for his family, while we’re privy to many life affirming lessons along the way.

Marcel the Shell with Shoes On is hilarious, sweet, emotional and just so endearingly earnest, all delivered with a gentle, reflective, and almost meditative tone. It’s about relationships, community, hope, love and what it means to truly live.

This lovely film has a way of sneaking up on you, soaking you in the world of these wonderful characters, so much so that it hurts to say goodbye when the credits roll. Good things really do come in small packages.
