Casting for a new generation of anglers

Has anyone noticed how many youngsters are getting around with fishing rods of late? Little Huckleberry Finns creating their own adventures and memories away from screens and the burdens of the world. How good.

As they grow older and life becomes more complicated, this connection with the outdoors will give them a way to switch off and reconnect with the value of the simpler things in life.

My son and his mates make up part of the revolution. I’ve watched them develop their passion along the local rivers and estuaries catching Bonito, Bream and Flathead with nothing more than a humble servo Pilchard.

More recently, they’ve graduated – somewhat nervously – to the local rock platforms where things have become infinitely more complicated. Now they’re learning how to read conditions, understand safety, and refine their rigs and tackle to take on larger, more powerful species like Kingfish.

Hard lessons have already been experienced with tales of lost fish and big hours for no result. But that won’t stop them, the hard lessons and mistakes are already getting fewer as they gain experience.

Darius Gillet (pictured) has been leading the pack, landing 90cm and 74cm Kingfish recently from the rocks. Great job Darius.

What’s biting?
