A vote for change

Joeline Hackman, Independent candidate for Manly

I am Joeline Hackman, your Independent candidate for Manly and I know that politics can serve us better. I grew up on the Northern Beaches and have a deep connection to our community. My husband, Greg, and I are raising our two boys here and our family has strong affiliations to surf lifesaving, local schools, sport and environmental groups.

As a business consultant, I have seen first-hand the importance of clear and decisive legislation to enable planning for long-term success. I also have experience identifying where community support is needed and leading a targeted response.

I started Northern Beaches War on Waste five years ago bringing together like-minded residents and Council leaders to find local solutions to global problems. More recently, when Covid devastated our local business and medical communities, I immediately co-founded Feed Our Medics to relieve pressure on frontline health workers and provide income for our local hospitality sector.

It was this experience that made me realise that to position us for success, I needed a seat at the decision-making table in the NSW Parliament – influencing the decisions that impact our community every day. Manly has a long tradition of independent State MPs. Dr Peter Macdonald and Mr David Barr represented us for 16 of the last 24 years.  I am fortunate to have their support. We know the Federal independents represent us well in Canberra, and I plan to take these same values to Macquarie Street.

My key issues:

Community – I am passionate about community consultation and being a strong voice for local issues, including pokies, education and surf clubs.

Integrity – I want to see greater integrity in government. I think we have all had enough of the ‘jobs for mates’ culture and pork-barrelling.

Strong economy – I look at every issue through an economic lens. NSW is $11 bn in deficit, the 2023/24 forecast deficit recently doubled and we are missing out on many opportunities.

We deserve a competitive and transparent tendering process with public funds.  At the Northern Beaches Hospital, we have seen contracts for overseas ownership which do not return the investment dollars for the people of NSW.

Privatisation of our buses has left us without a fully functioning service. Too often school children and commuters are stranded as buses fail to arrive, and this is unacceptable. The ferry service is suffering with long queues and frequent mechanical issues which impact residents and our local economy.

Climate action – We’ve had a 6-fold increase in carbon emissions approved by the LNP since they agreed to a reduction in the Paris agreement. Instead of risking coastal offshore drilling we should be committing to NO new coal and gas projects. Also taxpayers subsidise the clearing of native forests an area the size of the Sydney CBD every 2 days in NSW that has put koalas on the threatened species list. We need the government to negotiate a fair price for our resources and fund our transition to cleaner technology.

The rising cost of living is a major concern. Whether it is housing affordability, energy costs or the weekly grocery bill, we have all been impacted – and we need a focus on ensuring no one is left behind. I’m not beholden to vested interests and I’m very determined to deliver for our community. A vote for me is a vote for Manly first.
