Album review: Shea Couleè, The Killers & Danzig

The Tawny Frogmouth loves great tunes. Each month we get music expert Digby Robinson to give his critique on all styles of music, ranging from new releases to old favourites. This month’s album reviews are Shea Couleè, The Killers & Danzig.

SHEA COULEÈ – 8

If you haven’t seen Ru Paul’s Drag Race, you’ll never have heard of Shea. As my girlfriend had the show on at any chance she gets I take note from time to time at how talented the contestants are. Shea is one of the only ones who has actually gone ahead and released their own album. It’s a collection of infectious 90s style, disco dancefloor boogies with killer ballads sprinkled in amongst them. The only downside is when Shea tries to throw in some rap, it feels forced and the lyrics are uninspired, whereas the albums lyrics as a whole are brilliant.

Stand Out Track:  Your Name
For fans of: Pet Shop Boys, Jamiroquai
Rating:  3.5/5 Stars

THE KILLERS – HOT FUSS

The 00s were an odd time for rock, no one knew quite where to take it, but there was one form that seemed to shine through, indie rock. With bands like the Arctic Monkeys and Franz Ferdinand holding the torch, it was the Killers who led the charge. Mr Brightside became impossible to avoid if you liked it or not. Rock music for those who don’t like rock as I like to say. Lyrics that were easy to remember and proactive enough to sound edgy without offending. It’s a great album but unfortunately overrated which damages its score slightly.

Stand Out Track: Somebody Told Me
For fans of: Kings of Leon, The Kooks
Rating: 4/5 Stars

DANZIG

This one goes out to the Mother’s Day metal heads, with Danzig, a late 80s metals band fronted by former Misfits lead singer Glen Danzig. Their debut single is a great mix of blues-infused, pounding metal tracks. Glen has such a rough yet soothing voice. In a time where everyone was playing pop metal, Danzig stood out due to their unique sound. A darker tone and look than most others of the time but stacked with vocal hooks and riffs to keep punters entertained. Mother is the standout track here and the album is worth the listen just for that.

Stand Out Track: Mother
For fans of: Dio, Rainbow, Iron Maiden
Rating:  4/5 Stars
