Do you remember the first stage show you saw? How did it leave you feeling? For me, there’s no better feeling than walking into a theatre, taking a seat among a sea of strangers; the lights go down, the show begins and collectively you experience something beautiful – storytelling, music, movement in dance – you leave your seat at the end, surrounded by people who are not quite strangers anymore. It’s magic.
When COVID-19 hit, the lights went down at Glen Street Theatre. Around the world we shut down and shut in – but we still craved that connection, inspiration, and comfort that the arts give. Now, as we emerge from our collective social hibernation it is more important than ever that we immerse ourselves in the pleasure and community of art spaces.
We are so lucky here on the Northern Beaches to have our very own performing arts centre in Glen Street Theatre at Belrose – a home for comedy, drama, music, film, dance, and wonderful children’s performances. The team there have faced big challenges navigating the pandemic and now they are turning towards a brand new 2023 season launch that promises their loyal theatre-going community, as well as new friends plenty of laughter, reflection, music, and entertainment! The lights are on and burning bright, the stage is lit with possibility!
The 2023 Season Launch in November will see some familiar performances return, such as the hilarious and beloved The Wharf Revue, with their new show – Looking for Albanese. As well as some of the finest drama productions in The Sunshine Club and the acclaimed Wild Thing. There will be laughs galore at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival Roadshow, as well as pure magic as Roald Dahl’s The Twits and Mem Fox’s classic Possum Magic are brought to life on the stage! Glen Street Theatre is also home to lots of film screenings including the ever-popular Manhattan Short Film Festival and Warren Miller’s action-packed
snow films. There’s plenty to get your ‘groove on’ to as well, with an unbeatable rollcall of fabulous musicians and tribute shows.
So, dress up, head out and meet some friends, have a glass of bubbly in the foyer – indulge in the happiness and excitement of live performance! We know that small joys have such a big impact on our overall wellbeing, and sharing creatively, experiencing stories and music are fantastic ways to connect – good for the mind, good for the soul! It is also a great time for our children – who may not yet have experienced the wonder of a stage show – to take a trip to the theatre. To open up their world to new ideas, inspiration and creativity and to challenge them to think critically and learn. What a joy it is to see their faces light up and their brains start ticking over all the ways they too can be creative, learn and play through theatre.
